It takes place by kind permission of the headmaster of St Martin’s, Ampleforth. Most of you will know that Gilling was the family seat of the main line of the Fairfaxes for three centuries. The great building is more a medieval fortified house than a true castle, though the massive central block has all the appearance of a castle keep. The building has been altered and extended by generations of Fairfaxes down to the 18th century. The magnificent Great Chamber created by Sir William Fairfax in 1585 is said to be one of the most beautiful Elizabethan rooms remaining to us more or less intact. The wonderful frieze all around the ceiling contains the coats of arms of all the noble families of Yorkshire appropriately depicted in lively painted ‘trees’. Cortese’s splendid stucco ceilings in the later wings are comparable with those of Fairfax House. There may even be time to explore the delightful gardens and at least a part of the extensive estate. Stout shoes would be desirable for an extended walk.
Before this we will visit the attractive village of Bolton Percy where the fine 14th century church contains some important Fairfax monuments. The beautiful garden created in the churchyard is also well worth seeing. A home-made light lunch will be provided at Bolton Percy.
