A visit to Cumberland House and Castlegate House.

We are most grateful to the owners of Cumberland House and Castlegate House for the opportunity to visit their superb mansions.

We start at Cumberland House (c.1710) a handsome brick building standing on a stone plinth and created for William Cornwall, who was Lord Mayor of York in 1712 and 1725.

We then proceed to Castlegate House, built by John Carr for the Recorder of York, Peter Johnson, in 1762. Castlegate House also has a Masonic Lodge attached (Ward & Leckenby c.1920) which we will have an opportunity to view. Members of the Lodge have kindly agreed to open the bar so we can purchase drinks at the end of the visit.
