Members will have the opportunity to hear about current work and to see the department’s facilities.
The Department of Archaeology, founded in 1978, moved to the King’s Manor in 1995, where it merged with the Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies. It is one of the largest Archaeology departments in the country, with vibrant teaching and research programmes. Its original focus was on medieval archaeology but key areas of research have been extended to include pre-history, bio-archaeology, and heritage studies. Recent fieldwork projects included a Pictish monastery in Scotland, a Viking cemetery near Derby, the Mesolithic site at Star Carr, and deep-sea diving for submerged coastlines in the Red Sea.
