This October Fairfax House comes alive and alight with three special and very different performances revealing the dark world of life at Fairfax House after the sun goes down.
As winter creeps forward, Fairfax House is making the most of the early nights and atmospheric shadows in Fairfax House After Dark. As part of the Illuminating York Festival the House will be opening its doors after dark for three nights (Wednesday 29 October, Thursday 30 October & Saturday 1 November) for a very unusual experience – a candlelit tour led by the mansion’s original Georgian inhabitants. Electric lighting is strictly taboo, as visitors have the chance to be taken through the House by candlelight with Lord Fairfax, his daughter Anne, and members of his household staff. Giving an unvarnished insight into eighteenth-century life, this special performance offers guests an unparalleled opportunity to step back in time to city living in Georgian York.
Already into its fourth year, Fairfax House After Dark has been a sell-out success that has met with acclaim and a series of delighted audiences.
Fairfax House Director, Hannah Phillip, commented, “Fairfax House changes its character completely once its doors are closed, and especially so when all lights are turned off, and candlelight comes into play. Until you have experienced it, it is impossible to imagine what a different place it is, and just how magical the atmosphere is that is created”.
