On 19 April 1763 Viscount Fairfax celebrated the completion of the house by giving an entertainment and ball for 200 ladies and gentlemen. 6,700 bottles of beer were ordered from the brewer John Moyser. 480 bottles of wine came from cellarman Lawson. There were 63 courses although it was not expected that each guest should sample every dish.
