Memories of St George’s Hall and Cinema
Oral History Project
Fairfax House is running a special project to collect and record memories of Fairfax House’s days as a thriving cinema and dancehall.
The project will recapture the excitement of a very different time in the history of Fairfax House, and these histories will be used to create an important record of local memories and a celebration of York’s rich cinematic heritage.
Do you remember coming to St. George’s Hall to see a film or for a special event – the queues, special screenings, three pence tickets, or double seats in the back row? Perhaps you or a member of your family worked at the cinema, as a projectionist or usherette? Your memories can be general, even very small, or they may relate to a specific time, event or film at St George’s. We are also interested in collecting photos or memorabilia from the time.
If you have stories about the cinema that you would like to share, we would love to hear from you.
