The final event of 2022 will be a Three Churches Tour led by the erudite and enthusiastic Dr Jane Crease.
Tea will be an especial treat this year as Sara Winn Darley has invited us to her home at Aldby Park in Buttercrambe after we have visited the local church.
We will visit St Botolph’s Church Bossall, a magnificent cruciform church with much of the Norman architecture still visible. It has a chequered history – one of the transepts was used as a cattle shelter until 1906, but it is now restored. It sits opposite the medieval moated site of Bossall manor.
St John’s Church Howsham is one of the earliest by the Victorian architect G W Street and is his masterpiece. Built at the cost of Hannah Cholmley of Howsham Hall, all the materials are of the highest quality and it is unaltered since its building in 1859-60. It sits in a superb position with a view over the valley of the Derwent.
St John Evangelist Church Buttercrambe is a treasure house of memorials of the Darley family. Reduced in size from its medieval build, it is a lovely example of an estate church tucked away in the heart of the village.
There is limited parking so share a car if you can, and wear sensible shoes.
