Are you enthusiastic, friendly, and passionate about history? We’d love to welcome you as a volunteer at Fairfax House.
Our Room Hosts are essential to the running of our museum; we quite literally couldn’t open our doors without them! As a volunteer, you’ll play a key role in bringing our beautiful eighteenth-century townhouse to life for visitors.
Please note: we are urgently trying to fill our Friday and Saturday volunteering slots. Please let us know if those times work for you, and we will prioritise your application.
Volunteering with us is a fantastic opportunity to:
- Share and protect a stunning piece of York’s history
- Build your skills and confidence
- Learn more about heritage, museums, and education
- Meet new people and be part of a welcoming community
- Flexible and low commitment
We only ask for one 2.5-hour shift every two weeks, and even that small amount of time makes a huge difference to our visitors.
Is this role for you?
You don’t need any prior knowledge or experience — just a willingness to learn and engage. We provide full training, including everything you’ll need to know about the house, its stories, and its collections.
You’ll enjoy this role if:
- You like chatting with people from all backgrounds
- You’re interested in history and love learning
- You can commit to one short shift per fortnight
What you’ll do:
- Welcome visitors into the historic rooms of Fairfax House
- Offer a warm, informative experience
- Share the stories behind the house and its collection
